Some voices fill a room. Sonia Keshwani's fills it and then keeps going — the kind of sound that makes a crowd forget they were ever checking their phones. The Seattle vocalist is best known for reimagining Bollywood and Hindi film songs through acoustic, folk, and semi-classical textures — romantic, soulful, the kind of set you feel more than you hear. But ask her what she's chasing these days, and she won't name a note. She'll name a feeling.

Where it starts

Music as meditation

Music offers me peace. It's completely immersive. When I'm performing, I enter a zone where everything else disappears.Sonia Keshwani

For Sonia, music has always been more than performance. She's been at it for roughly fifteen years — and while she first came up through competitions and band sets, her relationship with the art kept quietly shifting underneath her. Somewhere along the way the scoreboard stopped mattering. What replaced it was learning, growth, and a deeper kind of expression — the reason she still steps to the mic in the first place.

The turn

From the stage to the whole experience

Over the past two years, Sonia widened the frame. She moved into event management and design and found something she didn't expect: she doesn't just love performing — she loves building the entire night around it, from the first note to the last light cue.

On stage or behind it, the throughline is the same: soulful melodies — raw, beautiful, emotionally resonant performance you feel in your chest, not just your ears.

The new project

The story behind The Velvet Stories

The Velvet Stories is a three-women-led production — two of them overseeing dance, one leading the live music. What they envisioned is a single, seamless world where live music and dance move as one, weaving folk-inspired performance, classical texture, and theatrical storytelling into one immersive evening.

At its heart is a story drawn from the Mughal era — not a pretty period piece, but a meditation on art itself. The trio kept returning to the same quiet question: how much of what we enjoy today as everyday privilege was, back then, never even allowed to be normalized — least of all for the women of the court?

The reimagining

Rewriting history, one secret letter at a time

Rather than place women as decoration — entertainers performing for others — the production puts their creativity, agency, and artistry at the center of the story.

It imagines queens who begin secretly writing to one another, inviting each other to share the passions society told them to suppress: music, dance, art. A quiet rebellion, sealed and sent across courts.

We didn't want women to be objectified. We wanted to tell a story about women reclaiming their right to create. The Velvet Stories creative team
The payoff

A night where art comes out of hiding

It all builds to a single transformative evening — a gathering where queens and women from every background come together to celebrate music, dance, and expression out in the open, with nothing to hide.

Together, the team frames The Velvet Stories as a reimagining of history: a what-if for everyone whose art was never allowed to see daylight. Because while the history books fixate on wars, rulers, and power, they're convinced there's a whole shadow archive of untold stories about creativity that never got told. Live music, dance, and one immersive celebration — they call it a Velvet Night.
